Incredible Sound!

2013 Skip Kelley F-5More Details
This monster mandolin, Skips 41st, was sold new bu MandoMutt back in early 2013. Original owner just purchased a brand new Redwood topped Skip Kelley, so this fine example is available again. We're getting $6500 for new Kelley F-5's, so this one is a bargain, considering it's in nearly new condition.

Specs; aged Adirondack Spruce (from the late Ted Davis' stash) top, heavily flamed Maple back/sides/neck in an antique sunburst, oil varnish finish with french polish top coat. Triple bound (w/b/i) throughout, radiused Honduran Rosewood fretboard, engraved James tailpiece, Schaller tuning gears and Claro Walnut headstock overlay with Mother-of-Pearl flowerpot inlay.

Beyond Beast sound. The Red Spruce has opened up nicely and features an evenly balanced, classic bluegrass tone. Very responsive and a banjo crushing chop. Comparable to a pair of Daley Vintage mandolins we've had, "like a Gibson on steroids."

Near mint condition. Has minor fretwear, otherwise mint.

Includes rectangular case with vintage green interior.

Trades gladly considered on this fine made in America instrument.

Price: $4,499.95

Gibson on Steroids!

2014 Daley Classic F-5 **SOLD**More Details
Handcrafted by Sim Daley, a former Gibson builder. Daley was one of the primary reasons that Derrington era Gibsons are consistently sensational. Pre-owned Daley mandolins are rarely available for purchase, and, we are told, Sim is no longer building mandolins, which will make them even harder to come by.

Specs; Engelmann Spruce top, Curly Maple back/sides/neck in a dark sunburst satin finish, 3-ply bindings throughout, flat Ebony fretboard and Flower Pot headstock inlay. Nickel hardware includes Grover tuning gears and engraved James tailpiece.

Very strong sound. Dry, woody and dynamic, this mandolin rocks. Stellar mid-range "pop". Powerful and responsive and well balanced. Killer chop. Sensational bluegrass mandolin.

Excellent-plus condition overall. Has a few pick scratches and "pinky shine" below fretboard, a couple dings on the f-hole edges, scroll shows numerous dings (as seen in photos), back of peg head shows a nick or two from clip-on tuner and light fret wear.

Includes shaped Guardian case. Trades gladly considered on this fine American instrument.

2001 Gibson F-5L
2001 Gibson F-5L

Fantastic Fern!!!

2001 Gibson F-5LMore Details
This Derrington Era Gibson has some natural distressing, but my goodness does she have the tone. Easily the best sounding Danny Roberts signed F-5L that we've had. Not a trophy, but certainly a fine bluegrass mandolin.

Specs: Sitka Spruce top, highly flamed Maple back/sides/neck in a cremona burst, gloss lacquer finish, 3-ply bound body, headstock and pick guard, single Ivoroid bound fretboard. Flat Ebony fretboard, Adjustable Ebony bridge, tone bar bracing and Abalone Fern headstock inlay. Gold hardware includes; engraved traditional tailpiece and (replacement) Schaller tuning gears.

Exceptional sound. Warm, dry and woody with excellent note separation. Killer mid range pop and clear, ringing highs. Big, percussive chop and very good volume. The Roberts Gibson's can be hit and miss. This one's a home run.

Excellent-minus condition. Top has some light scratches and a few small dings, but the biggest issue is from improper location of the bridge base. Apparently it was improperly located at some point and the finish has been scarred down to the wood from the bridge feet. Back and sides show some blemishes from a Tone Gard (I really don't understand why people use those things!!!) and headstock has some string marks. Light fret wear, nearly none. Fretboard extension has been professionally scooped.

Includes rectangular TKL case. Trades gladly considered on this fine, American made instrument.

Hot Blonde!

2017 Pava Player A-5 More Details
Poor man's Ellis, built by Pava Knezevic in the Ellis shop in Austin Tx. Second Blonde Pava Player we've had recently. Acquired in trade with another dealer, this is a brand new instrument, offered as pre-owned. It features a stunning blonde finish and one piece Maple back.

Specs; Adirondack Spruce top, flamed Red Maple one piece back, Red Maple sides and neck, blonde gloss lacquer finish and tortoise bound body. Radiused Ebony fretboard, parallel tone bars and gold hardware includes cast Allen tailpiece and Gotoh tuning gears and Mother-of-Pearl script headstock inlay.

Very impressive sound, right out of the box. Deep, woody and rich. Outstanding volume and a big bluegrass chop. Wish we had an Ellis currently, so that we could compare, but I suspect they'd sound quite similar.

New condition without flaw or blemish.

Includes Golden Gate case. Trades gladly considered on this fine made in America instrument.

Brand new Silverangel, built by Ken Ratcliff from Kentucky. Also a new model for Ken. The Bull. We like it. Big, powerful sound featuring a modified 2-point design, black faced varnish finish and top shelf woods. Irresistible!

In Ken's words the back is called "Moonburst using only black resulting in an olive color". Difficult to understand how an American made, solid wood mandolin that sounds as good as this one can be had for under $1500. A true bargain and an outstanding choice as a back-up or a step-up from a beginner.

Specs: solid Spruce, one piece Curly Maple back, Maple sides and neck in a traditional sunburst gloss lacquer finish, single-ply bindings throughout, flat Ebony fretboard and Mother-of-Pearl headtsock inlay. Nickel hardware includes cast tailpiece and Schaller tuning gears.

Sensational sounding mandolin, featuring a woody and dry tone. Sounds much richer than it's modest price tag. Awesome mid-range "pop" and nicely balanced. Excellent volume and killer chop. A fine bluegrass mandolin.

Excellent condition relative to age, but does show a few healthy dings in the top which do show in photos. Also shows some light pick marks and such. Some of the tuning gears are stiff. Frets recently dressed by Randy Wood.

It just doesn't get any better than this in the under $1K club. In fact, it rarely gets better in the under $4K club either! Sensational sounding mandolin with a radius fretboard and a lovely burst.

Specs; select solid Spruce top, flamed Maple back/sides/neck in a cremona sunburst gloss lacquer finish, 3-ply (w/b/w) bindings throughout, radius Ebony fretboard, tone bar bracing, Fleur-de-Lis headstock inlay and nickel hardware including Gotoh tuning machines.

Very powerful bluegrass mandolin that features a dry, woody tone. Responsive and nicely balanced with exceptional sustain and a banjo bustin' chop. We've had a lot of mandolins priced at $5K plus that don't sound as strong as this little gem.

Excellent condition. Top has some play wear with some finger nail scratches in the "pinky plant" zone and some light markings on the bass side from a Tone Gard. Bridge has been moved at some point to correct intonation and finish shows a "shadow" of original location. Very light, but it is there. Minor fret wear.

Includes Golden Gate hard shell case.
