King of the Beasts!

.
Extraordinary mandolin handcrafted by Michael Heiden in Canada. Serial number F-36, this instrument features; an aged Engelmann Spruce top with some of the wildest grain we've seen, flamed Red Maple back/sides/neck in an Antique brown `burst gloss lacquer finish. Ivoroid bindings throughout, radiused Ebony fretboard with Abalone position dots and flowerpot headstock inlay.

Recent upgrades include; original tuning machines replaced with nickel plated Waverly's with Ebony buttons and original tailpiece replaced with engraved James tailpiece.

Most impressive is the sound. I can definitely hear why Mr. Heidens mandolins are so highly thought of. Tone is semi-dark and woody with exceptional "pop" and volume. Among the top three mandolins we've had and MandoMutt thinks it's easily the best sounding Engelmann Spruce mandolin she's heard. Responsive and powerful. Chop is quite "woof".

Near mint condition showing only light pick marks, makers marks and frets have minor wear. No noticeable blemishes or flaws other than slight footprint of original tuner plates on back of headstock.

MandoMutt has decided to award this mandolin, Heiden F-36, her coveted "Beyond Beast Award", making it the ninth instrument to achieve the "BBA". She joins a Daley Vintage, a Kimble F-5 and a 1939 Martin D-18 (only guitar to receive a "BBA) as the only non-Gibson's and only the second instrument of 2011 to recieve a "BBA".

Includes a shaped "Canadian" case. Trades encouraged.

The B-1 Masterpiece

1994 Paganoni F-5More Details
.
MandoMutt's very first Paganoni. This is Doyle Lawson model B-1, number DL5 and was formerly owned by Doyle and also Allan Bibey.

A remarkable instrument featuring; German Silver Spruce top, highly figured Maple back/sides/neck in a medium caramel sunburst varnish finish, 3-ply bindings top/back/headstock, single ivoroid bound fretboard.

Flat Ebony fretboard with scooped extension, Abalone Fern headstock inlay and chrome hardware including engraved traditional tailpiece and Gotoh tuning gears.

Extraordinary sound. Nothing sounds better than a great mandolin that's been played for thousands of hours and much of those hours were by two of the best. Nice dry tone that really pop's. This is an ideal bluegrass mandolin featuring a killer mid-range, even balance and solid chop.

Excellent-minus condition. Has some natural "distressing" with wear slightly into the wood where the arm rests and below the strings from some energetic pickin'. Body also has scratches and small dings. Headstock has an abundance of string scratches and such. Finish is somewhat worn on back of neck. Frets have slight wear.

Includes Paganoni case. Trades considered.

Built by Ben Wilcox in Ohio and Ben's got it figured out. He's building instruments that are as good as anybody out there and I'm talking any price range.

Here's the specs; Adirondack Spruce top in dark coffee bean brown finish, extremely figured Maple one piece back and Maple rims and neck in an amber, wheat colored Varnish finish. Triple bound body and headstock, single Ivoroid bound fretboard.

Other goodies include; radiused Ebony fretboard, engraved James tailpiece, Golden Age tuning gears and mother-of-pearl "fluer-di-lis" headstock inlay.

This mandolin may well be the best sounding right-out-of-the-box mandolins I've played. Here's what Ben says about it's sound; "...nice crisp but deep sound to it, and you can really hear the woody/boxy tone to it.It is extremely responsive and has nice poppy tone from light to hard picking". I couldn't have described it better myself.

This is a brand new instrument, s/n 103 and label was signed on 01/22/2012. Includes Travelite case. Trades considered.
