This mandolin, I'm told, was the 7th built after Gibson purchased the Flatiron company, s/n 7007088 and label signed by Steve Carlson on August 18, 1987.

Sitka Spruce top, curly maple back/sides/neck in a light, ice tea sunburst gloss lacquer finish with 3-ply bindings throughout. Flat Ebony fretboard w/ scooped extension with faux frets and Mother-of-Pearl position dots. Gold hardware includes Schaller tuners w/ pearl knobs and engraved traditional tailpiece. Parallel tone bars and Abalone "Fern" headstock inlay round out the appointments.

Excellent tone; warm, woody and dry. Very good volume and big, beasty bluegrass chop. A well played, traditional sounding mandolin.

Excellent-plus condition overall. Does have maybe eight to ten small lacquer dings in the top, and perhaps a light scratch or three. Has a strap pin hole (yes, someone actually installed a strap pin on a scroll mandolin!) that has been filled. Currently has all original equipment with lone exception being frets which have been replaced with larger frets.

Includes original oblong case in decent, fully functional condition. Trades gladly considered on this fine American made Instrument.

Another incredible offering from Skip Kelly, this F-5, s/n 55 may well be his best all around mandolin to date. Fit and finish is excellent, top shelf woods and appointments and, as always, sensational sound. Built to specs from April 25, 1923 Lloyd Loar F-5. A MandoMutt Beyond Beast selection, only the 14th instrument to be awarded a B.B. and our first selection since June of 2014.

Specs: 150+ year old California Redwood top, Big Leaf Quilted Maple back and sides, Maple neck in a vintage burst, varnish finish, 100+ year old Red Spruce parallel tone bars and hide glue construction.

3-ply bindings on body, single bound fretboard and headstock, Macassar Ebony headstock overlay with flowerpot inlay, 16" radius Ebony fretboard and nickel hardware includes engraved James tailpiece and Gotoh tuning gears with pearl buttons.

I love Skip's Redwood top mandolins, in fact, my personal mandolin is a Redwood Kelley F-5. Mine has been played for four years now and sounds incredible, but this one may be better. If I could afford to trade up.........just a thought.

Very powerful with a warm, woody, dynamic sound. Notes really jump off the sound board. Explosive, big voice and chop. Hard to put it down. Beyond Beast sound, no doubt about it.
