This is s/n 38 from our good brother Skip Kelley and it's a Monster! This A-style Hoss is a bit of a rarity as it's our first Kelley with a radiused Ebony fretboard.

Other features include; Carpathian Spruce top, Big Leaf Maple back/sides/neck an antique sunburst, hand rubbed varnish finish. Triple bound (b/w/b) body, fretboard and headstock, engraved James tailpiece, Elite tuning gears and topped off with a modified "vine" Abalone inlay.

This Kelley is very responsive with a warm, dry, somewhat dark tone with an exceptional mid-range and clear, cutting highs. Big, bossy bluegrass chop. This Kelley is very responsive with a warm, dry, somewhat dark tone with an exceptional mid-range and clear, cutting highs. Big, bossy bluegrass chop. Lightweight, but powerful. Excellent choice for bluegrass music. Will excel on stage, in studio or parking lot picking.

This is a brand new mandolin, label signed on March 23, 2012. It has one blemish on the top where the stain did something a little weird in an area near the bass f-hole, approximately 1/4" in diameter. You'd probably never notice it if I hadn't mentioned it. We normally ask $3K for Skip's new A-5's, but we're listing this one at a slight discount due to the blemish.

Includes a Golden Gate hard shell case and Limited Lifetime (of the builder) warranty. Trades gladly considered on this fine instrument.

MandoMutt has had around a dozen of Skip's mandolins over the past few years and all have been exceptional, but this particular A-5, s/n 29, is my favorite. I adored this mandolin last summer when we sold it new and I love it even more now.

Features; California Redwood top (think Dearstone), highly flamed Maple back/sides/neck in a traditional tobacco `burst, oil varnish finish with french polish top coat. Triple bound (w/b/w) top and back, double bound fretboard (w/b) and 3-ply headstock binding (i/w/b).

Also features Red Spruce parallel tone bars. Flat Rosewood fretboard (no position marks) with a Monteleone style extension, gold hardware including a Monteleone style cast tailpiece and Elite tuners. Rosewood headstock overlay with an elegant modified Fern inlay. Headstock is also Monteleone style.

She's also a beast (in a sweet way!), very close to MandoMutt's highly coveted "Beyond Beast". Tone is somewhat dry and quite woody with complex overtones. Extremely powerful voice with a strong mid-range "pop" that bluegrassers love, while also providing clear, ringing highs. Playability, tone and volume are all 10's.

Excellent-plus condition. Has a couple tiny pings and slight bridge base footprint showing in finish, otherwise it would be Near Mint.

Includes Superior hard shell case. Trades gladly considered on this fine, handcrafted, 100% American made instrument.

2005 Gibson F-9 ***SOLD***More Details
.
Peppy F-9 from the Danny Roberts era at Gibson, this little Hoss provides outstanding tone and volume at a very nice price!

Features; Select Spruce top, Curly Maple back/sides/neck in a antique brown matte finish, black binding on top, flat ebony fretboard, nickel hardware including Grover tuning machines and traditional tailpiece cover engraved with "The Gibson".

The F-9's are basically the same as their F-5G siblings without the frills. In fact, this F-9 sounds as good as most F-5G's and better than some we've had. Definitely has "Gibson sound" with dry and woody tone, superb volume and a fine set up.

Excellent-minus condition overall, showing several scratches on the top, above and below the strings. Tailpiece cover is somewhat tarnished and frets show some wear, but still plenty of life remaining. "Pinky shine" below strings. Back, sides and headstock are quite clean.

Fantastic choice for bluegrass, a super upgrade from a pac-rim or a fantastic back-up instrument. This mandolin is a HOSS and will not disappoint.

Includes a "Canadian" shaped hard shell case.

.
This is our second time around on this Weber. I sold her four years ago to a very good friend, a talented musician. As most of us do, he trades instruments often, but kept this mandolin a long time. You will not find a stronger Weber mandolin. Definitely the cream.

The Yellowstone Deluxe was the predecessor to the Weber Diamondbacks, a Mandolin Store exclusive. This particular instrument was built with an eighty year old Sitka Spruce top, flamed Maple back/sides/neck in a traditional tobacco sunburst satin finish. Body, fretboard and headstock are Ivoroid bound. Radiused Ebony fretboard with mother-of-pearl diamond position marks, cast tailpiece and Grover tuning machines.

One of the great things about a "distressed" mandolin is that the cosmetic condition just doesn't matter and you don't have to worry about blemishes and such, however this mandolin has been babied. Other than minor fret wear, she looks the same as the day she was shipped out.

Definitely has the "old school" look and feel, but more importantly, this mandolin sounds as "vintage" as she looks. Tons of deep woody and mid-range "pop". Quite traditional sounding. Responsive and very powerful.

Includes rectangular deluxe Weber case. Trades encouraged.

Mighty strong F-5 from one of the most underrated builders in America, Chris Baird. This is a fine bluegrass mandolin featuring; Adirondack Spruce top, highly flamed maple back/sides/neck in a traditional sunburst, hybrid varnish finish, fully bound, radiused Ebony fretboard, M.O.P. flowerpot headstock inlay, James tailpiece engraved with "Arches" and so forth.

Very impressive instrument with excellent fit and finish and a bold rich tone, outstanding volume, powerful mid-range and a chunky bluegrass "chop".

Excellent-plus overall condition. Previous owner had installed a pick-up which has since been removed. There's a tiny mounting hole on the side near lower point. One ding near scroll. Recent partial fret replacement and dressing and pro set-up.

Overall, this is an exceptional, well built, professional mandolin and a bargain at this price. Compares favorably with mandolins costing 2 to 3 times our asking price. Finest mandolin in it's price class!

Includes shaped Superior case. Trades gladly considered on this fine American made mandolin.

THE Monster

2010 Skip Kelley F-5 s/n 31 ***SOLD***More Details
Just picked this one up from Skip today and it's so impressive. Here's what Skip says about this instrument; "We A/B'd this mandolin with my friends 1927 Fern and we couldn't tell the difference between the two". Skip went on to say "I may never build another mandolin that sounds as good as this one".

Specs: 50+ year old Adirondack Spruce top, Big Leaf Maple back/sides/neck in a varnished, antique style reddish sunburst, three-ply (w/b/i) bindings on top and. Single ivoroid bound fretboard and headstock. Flat Ebony fretboard, engraved James tailpiece and Gotoh tuning machines with pearl knobs. Headstock features an Abalone and black pearl flowerpot inlay.

Incredible, Beyond Beast type sound features a bold, rich and full tone. Quite powerful as well with a huge bluegrass chop. Has the "woof" that will rattle the shutters. Banjo and Martin pickers will hate to see you coming. So strong that it can suck the air right out of your lungs.

Outstanding fit and finish on this, Skip's 31st mandolin. Label was signed Christmas day of 2010, so it's technically a 2010, but Skip's been playing this one regularly since it's completion, so we could call it a 2011.

It's a new instrument, for all intents and purposes and is offered with full, lifetime of the builder limited warranty and a Superior fiberglass case, red exterior, silver interior.

Trades gladly considered on this fine Kelley mandolin.

Bone Crusher!

.
This little monster is one of Skip's best F-5's, particularly from a sound perspective. Built in 2006, s/n 18 was his personal mandolin for over a year. Skip used #18 exclusively on the Skip and Ed recording "Little Green Valley". Mandolin Cafe members can hear Skip playing #18 on an original recording at this link; http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?46966-Original-tune-of-Kelley-mandolin&highlight=skip+kelley .

#18 features a European Spruce top, highly figured Maple back/sides/neck in a traditional sunburst matte varnish finish. Body is triple bound, single ply bindings on fretboard and headstock. Flat Ebony fretboard with 1-1/16" nut width, Gotoh tuning gears with pearl knobs and Abalone flower pot headstock inlay.

If you were to look up "bluegrass hoss" in the dictionary, a photo of this mandolin would be there. This instrument is the ultimate "jam" mando. You'll have no trouble cutting through the mix and will easily be heard, noticed and even feared by all the big bad Martin rosewoods and obnoxious 5-string banjers. Woody, dry and loud with a beasty bluegrass chop.

Overall condition is excellent plus with a few light surface scratches, a couple string scratches on the headstock and medium fret wear. Fret's still have plenty of life.

A great choice for stage or parking lot pickin', this mandolin will command attention in any setting. Includes Travelite case. Trades encouraged.

Extraordinary mandolin handcrafted by Michael Heiden in Canada. Serial number F-36, this instrument features; an aged Engelmann Spruce top with some of the wildest grain we've seen, flamed Red Maple back/sides/neck in an Antique brown `burst gloss lacquer finish. Ivoroid bindings throughout, radiused Ebony fretboard with Abalone position dots and flowerpot headstock inlay.

Recent upgrades include; original tuning machines replaced with nickel plated Waverly's with Ebony buttons and original tailpiece replaced with engraved James tailpiece.

Most impressive is the sound. I can definitely hear why Mr. Heidens mandolins are so highly thought of. Tone is semi-dark and woody with exceptional "pop" and volume. Among the top three mandolins we've had and MandoMutt thinks it's easily the best sounding Engelmann Spruce mandolin she's heard. Responsive and powerful. Chop is quite "woof".

Near mint condition showing only light pick marks, makers marks and frets have minor wear. No noticeable blemishes or flaws other than slight footprint of original tuner plates on back of headstock.

MandoMutt has decided to award this mandolin, Heiden F-36, her coveted "Beyond Beast Award", making it the ninth instrument to achieve the "BBA". She joins a Daley Vintage, a Kimble F-5 and a 1939 Martin D-18 (only guitar to receive a "BBA) as the only non-Gibson's and only the second instrument of 2011 to recieve a "BBA".
